Charity Program Overview

2009 – 2020: It is our 11th anniversary of giving back to our community.

We have donated over $300,000 to charity during the past ten years. The Charity Program has been great fun and very successful thanks to our sponsors and the generosity of our members. We have raffles at our monthly breakfasts, a fun White Elephant Auction at the Holiday Party, a silent auction at the Spring Charity event, charity laps during our Driver’s Education events, the Air & Auto Classic Car Show in the fall, and “Turkeys-in-the-Trunk” to support the Mayflower Marathon in Hampton Roads. It keeps our volunteers busy and we keep it all fun!

2018 was a specifically wonderful year for the First Settlers Region Charity Program!

In 2018, our Region raised over $100,000 and, with direct member involvement on the job site, built a house for Habitat for Humanity. The project took the commitment of a great team, our Board of Directors and the dedication, generosity, time and sweat equity of a large number of our members. Not to mention, a host of sponsors who are always there for us.

As a result of our work, a young family is living in a home of their own. It is, and will always be, the home built by the First Settlers Region, Porsche Club of America.

The following information highlights our sponsored charities for 2020.

Horizon Hampton Roads

Horizons is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization established over 40 years ago as a way to help children of poverty improve their education and break the cycle of poverty.

Horizons:

  • provides a 6-week summer educational enrichment program for 370 low-income K-8 grade public school students from 60 public schools in Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach. 75% of the students return each year with significant measurable gains in academics.
  • provides educational training to prevent the “summer slide” and develop critical reading and math skills.
  • provides two meals per day; often the only meals the children receive.
  • includes field trips to local museums, government offices, universities, and includes swim training.

All children thrive in high quality, enriching environments, but too many fail to get the start in life they need to fulfill their potential. Horizons Hampton Roads believes in the potential of every child. Their transformational community-centered approach is proven to close the opportunity gap for children and put them on a path to success in school and in life.

Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia

The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia’s mission is to lead the effort to eliminate hunger in our community. The Foodbank supports a 4,745 square mile service area, including the cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Franklin and Virginia Beach as well as the counties of Southampton, Northampton, Sussex, Isle of Wight and Accomack.

In the 2017-2018 fiscal year, the Foodbank :

  • acquired and distributed over 7 million pounds of food equating to 14.8 million meals to the community.
  • provided nutritious canned, boxed, fresh, frozen, and prepared food to over 150,000 food insecure individuals.
  • recovered and secured food from restaurants, supermarkets, food distributors, the USDA, farmers, wholesalers and through food and fund drives.
  • provided meals at a cost $0.34 and continued to use its buying power to convert a $1.00 donation into $6.00 worth of food
  • provided 412,000 meals to over 3,400 students enrolled in the Backpack weekend feeding program
  • distributed emergency food to over 235 Partner Agencies and Programs including soup kitchens, food pantries,
    emergency shelters and Mobile Pantries.

Turkeys-in-the-Trunk

Held in support of the annual “Mayflower Marathon”, a three-day food drive for the Foodbank.

The event combines the competitive spirit of direct member participation, coordination and support from the local Porsche dealership, strong community involvement and recognition for the Porsche Club of America in the local media. The volunteers at the food drive have come to expect the arrival of the Porsche caravan each year!

Habitat For Humanity

Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads’ mission is to build affordable homes that strengthen families and communities in South Hampton Roads.   They serve all seven geographical entities that comprise South Hampton Roads: Chesapeake, Isle of Wight, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Smithfield, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach.

Health Brigade

Health Brigade (formerly the Fan Free Clinic), has been in operation since 1970 and will soon celebrate 50 years of providing exceptional health services, to those least served in a caring and non-judgmental environment.

Health Brigade provides care to eligible residents of the following cities and counties: Amelia County, Caroline County, Charles City County, Chesterfield County, Cumberland County, Dinwiddie County, Essex County, Gloucester County, Goochland County, Hanover County, Henrico County, Isle of Wight County, King and Queen County, King George County, King William County, Lancaster County, Louisa County, Mathews County, Middlesex County, New Kent County, Northumberland County, Powhatan County, Prince George County, Richmond County, Southampton County, Surry County, Sussex County, Westmoreland County, City of Colonial Heights, City of Hopewell, City of Petersburg, City of Richmond, Town of Ashland

Services provided by Health Brigade to 12,000 individuals last year include:

  • Primary Care Medical Services
  • Mental Health and Wellness Services
  • Health Outreach and Advocacy Services

Health Brigade is able to maximize donations and in-kind resources to meet the demand for services. Last year, clients at Health Brigade benefited form over $4 million in donated time and services (Medical providers, donated labs, other diagnostic services, and supplies). With strategic use of cash and in-kind resources, Health Brigade was able to turn every $1 donated into $4 of health services for the clients.

Central Virginia Foodbank

1 in 7 Central Virginians is food insecure, meaning that nearly 200,000 of our neighbors are not receiving the necessary nutrition. And of that, more than 53,000 children, or 1 in 6, in Central Virginia do not know when or from where they will receive their next meal.

The Central Virginia Foodbank is one of many programs provided by Feed More, a network of agencies that provide more than 52,000 meals each day to neighbors in need across 34 counties and cities across Central Virginia. From the Northern Neck to Louisa County and south to the North Carolina border, we distributed 19.2 million meals through our programs and partners to Central Virginians who face hunger.

Feed More’s recipients, served through nearly 300 partner food pantries, soup kitchens, group homes and other community sites, are largely the working poor who come to seek our assistance in emergency situations.
