From the President

I’m sure you’ve heard it said. “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” Well that saying sure applies to the First Settler’s Board of Directors for 2018. You re-elected the same slate of Officers from 2017.
If you’re new to the club, or need a refresher, here’s the list. The six elected positions are: President; Doug Worrall, Eastern Vice President; Melinda Cagle, Western Vice President; Kevin Clark, Secretary; Ed Merry, Treasurer; John Schwaebler, and Activities Officer; Vince Canepa. Add to that group our Past President; Jason Horner, and you have our Executive Council. Then we have lots of appointed Board of Directors Chair positions that will be voted on in our first meeting of 2018. These are all the folks that make all the fun you are having possible. These men and women are all volunteers, and I can unequivocally tell you that there isn’t a better group in PCA! Volunteer to help out at an activity this year; you’ll have fun and you’ll find out what I’m talking about!
Between the weather and the road conditions, January and February tend to be slow months for seeing Porsches out and about. Cayenne’s, Macan’s, and other all wheel drive iterations make bad conditions a little easier to handle. Here’s to hoping for good weather for all of our three monthly breakfast gatherings. We meet in Williamsburg the first Monday of every month. The second Saturday of each month we meet in Richmond and Chesapeake. We do have a Fun Run scheduled for February 17th. It’s close enough to the 14th to call it a Valentine’s Fun Run. So bring your sweetheart and join us on a drive from Windsor to Smithfield Station for lunch.
Ed Merry has put together a new exciting route for us. If you want to head to warmer climes, Werks Reunion @Amelia Island starts on March 9th. This is a Porsche-centric event coordinated around the time of the famous Concours. If you’re looking to turn up the heat at the track, the zone 2 DE at VIR is March 16, 17, and 18. Although by the time you read this the run groups will most likely be full as this event usually sells out quickly.
March will also bring the chance to help out one of our charities, Horizons of Hampton Roads. We’ll have an outing to Top Golf in Virginia Beach with proceeds going to Horizons. Look for details to follow in an email and at our breakfast meetings. And while we’re on the subject of charities, FSR has launched an initiative to build a house for Habitat For Heroes in 2018. The home will go to a deserving veteran. I can’t think of a more worthy or appropriate cause for our club as a public service to our area! You’ll also find in this issue or on the website, an opportunity to give us some feedback about our newsletter. We are moving from 6 issues to 4 issues per year. There are also have some other modifications we’re looking into so we’d love to hear from you about them.
So here’s to 2018! If you haven’t been to an event, come out and join us. I can assure you that you’ll have fun because... .. It’s not just the cars, it’s the people! Keep the shiny side up! Doug Worrall
